Perils of Pelicans

Pouch torn by a careless fisherman.
  • Cast carefully! Watch for flying birds when you cast your lines. Use adequate weights so that bait sinks quickly. Chum away from birds whenever possible and avoid tossing fish high in the air where it will attract their attention.

  • Don't cut the line. If you find a line hanging from inside a bird's mouth, don't cut it. There is probably a hook on the other end, waiting to go down further to do more damage. Leave the line secured around the mouth so it cannot slip down, and call the center immediately for hook removal by a veterinarian.

  • Don't release the bird. If you accidentally hook a bird, don't tug on the line. Try to lure the bird with a fish or use a net for rescue. Let the hooked bird drift toward you as you gently guide it in. Do not pull hard on the leg or wing as this can injure the bird further. The injured bird must be examined and treated by a veterinarian at a licensed facility.
